What is the Measurement of Creativity?

Houtz and Krug (1995) review various tests designed to assess creativity, focusing primarily on divergent thinking. Among these tests are the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT), The Wallach and Kogan Tests, and The Guilford Battery.

The Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) is the most commonly used test for creativity assessment, with extensive research supporting its reliability and validity (Kim, 2006). The test has been translated into over 30 languages and is widely employed worldwide for evaluating creative potential. Developed in 1966, the TTCT measures creativity through divergent thinking, based on Guilford’s Structure of the Intellect (SOI) battery.

The TTCT, available in verbal and figural forms, has undergone four re-norming since its inception in 1966: in 1974, 1984, 1990, and 1998. It evaluates creativity based on four dimensions:

  1. Fluency: Total number of relevant responses.
  2. Originality: The rarity of ideas. The score is 0 for common ideas and 1 for unique ones, based on their statistical rarity.
  3. Elaboration: Number of added ideas.
  4. Flexibility: Number of response categories.

In 1990, Torrance removed the flexibility scale and introduced two new measures of creative potential: (i) the abstractness of titles and (ii) resistance to premature closure. These additions assess the degree to which titles move beyond concrete labelling and the level of psychological openness, respectively.

The TTCT typically takes about 30 minutes to administer, with scoring requiring specialized training and adherence to specific country norms. The 1998 manual provides norms for the United States, including both grade-related and age-related benchmarks, indicating some country-specific variations in creativity measurement.

Kim (2006) notes the existence of normative measures in other countries, usually developed for research purposes, highlighting the international interest in understanding and assessing creativity.
