It All Began With Drip Drip | Lesson 1 | Story | Part 1
A tiger was caught in a storm. He had wandered near the village, looking for something to eat. On the outskirts of that village lived an ill-tempered old woman. The tiger huddled in shelter close to the wall of the woman’s hut.
একটি বাঘ ঝড়ের কবলে পড়েছিল । সে গ্রামের কাছে ঘুরে বেড়াত, কিছু খাবারের খোঁজে । সেই গ্রামের প্রান্তে এক অসুস্থ বদমেজাজি বৃদ্ধা মহিলা বাস করতেন । বাঘটি মহিলার কুঁড়েঘরের দেয়ালের কাছে আশ্রয়ে আবদ্ধ ছিল ।
The old woman was feeling very ill-tempered that night. The rainwater was leaking through the roof.
সেই রাতে বৃদ্ধা মহিলাটি খুব অসুস্থ বোধ করছিলেন । ছাদ দিয়ে বৃষ্টির জল গড়িয়ে পড়ছিল ।

“There is no escape from this drip-drip”, she muttered angrily, pushing her bed around the room to keep it dry. She shoved the bed and a tin trunk against a wall. The wall shook.
“এই ফোঁটা-ফোঁটা থেকে রেহাই নেই”, তিনি রাগে বিড়বিড় করছিলেন, বিছানাটি শুকনো রাখার জন্য সেটি ঘরের চারপাশে ঠেলাঠেলি করছিলেন । তিনি বিছানা এবং একটি দেয়ালের বিরুদ্ধে একটি টিনের ট্রাঙ্ক সরিয়ে রাখলেন । দেয়ালটি কাঁপল ।
“This drip-drip will be the death of me!” she shouted.
“এই ফোঁটা-ফোঁটা আমার মৃত্যু হবে !” তিনি চিৎকার করে উঠলেন ।
The tiger on the opposite side of the wall felt the wall shake and was frightened. “The drip-drip must be a very dreadful creature,” he thought.
দেয়ালের উল্টো দিকের বাঘটি দেয়ালের ঝাঁকুনি অনুভব করে ভয় পেয়ে গেল । “ফোঁটা-ফোঁটা অবশ্যই খুব ভয়ঙ্কর প্রাণী হবে,” সে ভাবল ।

Meanwhile, Bholenath, the potter, was out in the night, looking for his donkey in the storm. Suddenly he saw an animal huddled in the dark against the wall of the woman’s hut.
এদিকে, কুমোর ভোলেনাথ, ঝড়ের মধ্যে তার গাধাকে খুঁজতে রাতে বাইরে বেরিয়েছিল । হঠাৎ সে দেখতে পেল একটা জন্তু অন্ধকারে মহিলার কুঁড়েঘরের দেয়ালের বিপরীতে আটকে আছে ।

“There is my donkey !” Bholenath shouted, and running to the tiger, grabbed it. He pulled the tiger’s ears.
“ওই তো আমার গাধা !” ভোলেনাথ চিৎকার করে বাঘের কাছে দৌড়ে গিয়ে জড়িয়ে ধরল । সে বাঘের কান ধরে টান দিল ।
“Move, you lazy donkey, or I will give you a hard time !”
“চল, অলস গাধা, নইলে আমি তোকে কঠিন শাস্তি দেব !”
The tiger was really frightened. “This must be the terrible drip-drip!” He thought.
বাঘটি সত্যিই ভয় পেয়ে গেল । “এটি অবশ্যই ভয়ঙ্কর ফোঁটা-ফোঁটা !” সে ভাবলো ।
Bholenath dragged the tiger home and kept him tied by a sturdy rope to a tree near his hut.
ভোলেনাথ বাঘটিকে বাড়িতে টেনে নিয়ে যায় এবং একটি শক্ত দড়ি দিয়ে তার কুঁড়েঘরের কাছে একটি গাছে বেঁধে রাখে ।

In the morning, Bholenath’s wife discovered the tiger tied to the tree and screamed in fear. Hearing her, the neighbours came running out of their huts. Bholenath was sleeping. He came out, too.
সকালে, ভোলেনাথের স্ত্রী বাঘটিকে গাছে বাঁধা অবস্থায় দেখে ভয়ে চিৎকার করে ওঠে । তার চিত্কার শুনে, প্রতিবেশীরা তাদের কুঁড়েঘরগুলি থেকে ছুটে আসে । ভোলেনাথ ঘুমাচ্ছিল । সেও বেরিয়ে আসে ।
The people were all mystified. “Who tied this tiger to the tree?” They asked.
লোকেরা সবাই হতভম্ব হয়ে গিয়েছিল । “এই বাঘটাকে কে গাছের সাথে বেঁধেছে ?” তারা জিজ্ঞাসা করেছিল ।
A neighbour said, “I think Bholenath can tell us. I saw him last night dragging an animal through the storm.”
একজন প্রতিবেশী বললো, “আমার মনে হয় ভোলেনাথ আমাদের বলতে পারবে । আমি তাকে গতরাতে
ঝড়ের মধ্যে দিয়ে একটি প্রাণীকে টেনে নিয়ে যেতে দেখেছি ।”

Bholenath was too frightened to admit his mistake. Everyone looked questioningly at Bholenath. In the meantime, the tiger, disturbed and confused by all the people, had chewed through the rope. It ran away to the jungle. The villagers were relieved.
ভোলেনাথ নিজের ভুল স্বীকার করতে খুব ভয় পেয়েছিল । সকলেই প্রশ্নবিদ্ধভাবে ভোলেনাথের দিকে তাকিয়েছিল । এরই মধ্যে, বাঘটি, সমস্ত লোকের দ্বারা বিরক্ত এবং বিভ্রান্ত হয়ে দড়িটি চিবিয়েছিল । সে দৌড়ে জঙ্গলে চলে গেল । গ্রামবাসীরা স্বস্তি পেল ।
Bholenath now saw an opportunity to brag.
ভোলেনাথ এবার বড়াই করার সুযোগ দেখল ।
“It is I who captured the tiger last night. I even pulled its ears,” Bholenath announced proudly. Everyone marvelled at his bravery.
“গত রাতে আমিই বাঘটিকে ধরেছিলাম । এমনকি আমি এর কানও টেনেছিলাম,” ভোলেনাথ গর্ব করে ঘোষণা করল । প্রত্যেকে তার সাহসিকতায় বিস্মিত হয়ে গেল ।
Soon the news of Bholenath’s bravery reached the king. The king was highly impressed. He made Bholenath the Commander-in-chief of the king’s army. Bholenath and his wife were given a huge house to live in.
শীঘ্রই রাজার কাছে ভোলেনাথের বীরত্বের খবর পৌঁছে গেল । রাজা অত্যন্ত মুগ্ধ হলেন । তিনি ভোলেনাথকে রাজার সৈনবাহিনীর সর্বাধিনায়ক করলেন । ভোলেনাথ এবং তার স্ত্রীকে থাকার জন্য একটি বিশাল বাড়ি দেওয়া হলো ।

A few months after that evening, news came that a neighbouring king has declared war. Bholenath and his king gathered at the royal court. The king told Bholenath, “You are the Commander-in-chief of my army. I entrust you with the duty of protecting my state.”
সেই সন্ধ্যার কয়েক মাস পর, খবর আসে যে প্রতিবেশী এক রাজা যুদ্ধ ঘোষণা করেছেন । ভোলেনাথ ও তার রাজা রাজদরবারে সমবেত হলেন । রাজা ভোলেনাথকে বললেন, “তুমি আমার সেনাবাহিনীর সর্বাধিনায়ক । আমি তোমাকে আমার রাজ্য রক্ষার দায়িত্ব অর্পণ করছি ।”
Bholenath came back home in utter despair. “I don’t even know how to ride a horse”, he told his wife helplessly, “How will I defend our borders against eight thousand enemy soldiers?”
ভোলেনাথ নিদারুণ হতাশ হয়ে বাড়ি ফিরে এল । “আমি ঘোড়ায় চড়তেও জানি না”, সে তার স্ত্রীকে অসহায়ভাবে বলল, “আট হাজার শত্রু সৈন্যের বিরুদ্ধে আমি কীভাবে আমাদের সীমান্ত রক্ষা করব ?”
“Don’t worry,” his wife said, “I’ll tie you to the horse.”
“চিন্তা করো না,” তার স্ত্রী বলল, “আমি তোমাকে ঘোড়ার সাথে বেঁধে দেব ।”
In the morning, the king sent Bholenath a magnificent stallion. Bholenath got up glumly on the horse and his wife securely tied him to it with a rope. The horse did not like the feel of the tight ropes. It reared suddenly and galloped off wildly. Bholenath hung desperately to its mane.
সকালে, রাজা ভোলেনাথকে একটি চমৎকার অশ্বারোহী পাঠালেন । ভোলেনাথ ঘোড়ায় চড়ে উঠল এবং তার স্ত্রী তাকে নিরাপদে দড়ি দিয়ে বেঁধে দিল । ঘোড়ার আঁটসাঁট দড়ির অনুভূতি ভালো লাগল না । এটি হঠাৎ পিছিয়ে গেল এবং বন্যভাবে দ্রুততার সঙ্গে এগিয়ে গেল । ভোলেনাথ তার কেশর ধরে মরিয়া হয়ে ঝুলতে লাগল ।
Realising that the horse was headed straight for the enemy camp, Bholenath shouted in fear. The horse could not be stopped.
ঘোড়াটি সোজা শত্রু শিবিরের দিকে যাচ্ছে বুঝতে পেরে ভোলেনাথ ভয়ে চিৎকার করে উঠল । ঘোড়াটাকে থামানো গেল না ।
Bholenath noticed a large tree with its branches hanging over the road. As the horse galloped under the tree, Bholenath reached up to grasp the branches and pull himself free. But the branches broke away in his hands. The horse had entered the enemy camp.
ভোলেনাথ লক্ষ্য করল রাস্তার উপর একটা বড় গাছের ডাল ঝুলছে । ঘোড়াটি গাছের নিচে দৌড়ে যাওয়ার সাথে সাথে ভোলেনাথ ডালগুলো আঁকড়ে ধরতে এবং নিজেকে টেনে মুক্ত করতে উঠে আসে । কিন্তু ডালগুলি তার হাতে ভেঙে যায় । ঘোড়াটি শত্রু শিবিরে প্রবেশ করে ।
The enemy soldiers were astonished to see a wild-looking man tied to a fierce stallion, waving branches excitedly. “Help, help!” Bholenath was shouting. The enemy soldiers did not hear him. They were greatly scared. “This must be some great warrior come single-handedly to defeat us!” The soldiers were overcome with fear and instantly ran away without putting up a fight.
শত্রু সৈন্যরা অবাক হয়ে দেখল যে একজন বন্য চেহারার লোক একটি ভয়ঙ্কর স্তূপের সাথে বাঁধা, উত্তেজিতভাবে ডালপালা নাড়ছে । “সাহায্য, সাহায্য !” ভোলেনাথ চিৎকার করছিল । শত্রু সৈন্যরা তার কথা শুনতে পাচ্ছিল না । তারা খুব ভয় পেয়ে গেল । “এটি অবশ্যই কোনো মহান যোদ্ধা হবে যে আমাদের পরাজিত করতে এককভাবে এসেছে !” সৈন্যরা ভয়ে কাবু হয়ে এবং লড়াই না করেই তৎক্ষণাৎ পালিয়ে যায় ।
Soon the news of Bholenath’s great victory spread. Everyone was amazed that he had defended his state all by himself against eight thousand enemy soldiers. The king awarded him in a public ceremony. Bholenath became a legend.
শীঘ্রই ভোলেনাথের দুর্দান্ত বিজয়ের খবর ছড়িয়ে পড়ে । সবাই অবাক হয়ে গেল যে, সে আট হাজার শত্রু সৈন্যের বিরুদ্ধে একা নিজের রাজ্য রক্ষা করেছে । এক জনসভায় রাজা তাকে পুরস্কৃত করলেন । ভোলেনাথ কিংবদন্তি হয়ে উঠল ।
