How does the Environment Influence Human Health?

In this article, we will explain How does the Environment Influence Human Health? Explain it in detail with suitable examples.

The Environment Influences Human Health in different ways:

Genetic Influences:

Every living thing inherits a set of genes from its parents, called a Genome. Genes determine the physical and physiological characteristics of a living thing, which means how it looks and works. That’s why children look like their parents. Sometimes, people are born with abnormalities, which are called hereditary diseases. These diseases are passed from parents to children. Some other diseases like allergies, diabetes, high blood pressure, and schizophrenia aren’t entirely genetic. They happen because of how genes interact with the environment. Things like food, stress, feelings, hormones, drugs and other environmental interactions can make these diseases worse. If the environment is favourable for the person, these diseases might not happen. We call these diseases influenced by genetics.

Behavioural Influences:

Drinking too much alcohol, smoking, using drugs, chewing tobacco, or irregular food habits can make us sick. People’s habits change as they grow older. This depends on self-responsibility; how responsible they are, nutritional awareness; what they eat, stress management; how they deal with stress, physical fitness; how fit they are, and environmental sensitivity of an individual; how much they care about the environment.

For Instance, smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, and substance abuse can increase the risk of diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Environmental Influences:

The Environment affects our health in many ways. It includes things like the air we breathe, the water we drink, the places we live, and how we feel. All these things can affect our health. They can be physical (like pollution), chemical (like toxins), biological (like germs), social (like where we live), and psychological (like how we feel).

For Example:

  • Air Pollution: Breathing in polluted air from vehicle emissions and industrial activities can cause respiratory problems like asthma and lung diseases.
  • Water Contamination: Drinking water contaminated with toxins or bacteria can lead to waterborne illnesses such as diarrhea and cholera.
  • Unsafe Neighborhoods: Living in areas with high crime rates or lack of access to parks and recreational facilities can contribute to stress, anxiety, and mental health issues.
  • Natural Disasters: Events like floods, hurricanes, and wildfires can cause injuries, displacement, and trauma, impacting both physical and mental well-being.

Overall, the environment plays a crucial role in shaping human health through genetic factors, lifestyle choices, and exposure to various environmental hazards.
