What led Psychologists to Study Character Strengths?

Psychologists became interested in studying character strengths as a way to shift the focus from solely treating mental illness and disorders to promoting positive aspects of human experience and well-being. In the late 1990s, Martin Seligman and Christopher Peterson led a team of researchers to study human strengths and virtues across different cultures and historical periods. They identified six broad categories of virtues: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. Within each of these categories, they identified a set of character strengths that were deemed essential for human flourishing.
