In this article, we will Explain the Causes and Treatment of Eating Disorders.
Treatment of Eating Disorders.
Various treatments are available for eating disorders, including biological approaches using medication, psychotherapy based on psychodynamic principles, behavioural and cognitive-behavioural therapies, family therapy, and nutritional education. Most treatments combine medication with behaviour modification or psychotherapy.
1. The Biological Treatment:
Biological treatments have a higher dropout rate of 33%, while cognitive therapy has a lower dropout rate of only 5%.
2. Family Treatment:
Treatment involves family meetings where the therapist encourages exploration of the family’s beliefs and behaviours related to the disorder. Friends and others may also attend these meetings.
Therapists work together and assign homework tasks to the family based on their hypothesis for intervention.
3. Cognitive Behavioural Treatment:
The client engages in weekly to biweekly therapy with a cognitive therapist. The therapist explores the connection between thoughts, feelings, and eating behaviours, focusing on reducing anxiety and negative reinforcement of behaviours that promote thinness. Together, they examine societal perceptions of attractiveness and the client’s beliefs about body image. The therapy includes an educational component, assessing dietary options and physical activities. The client also monitors negative thoughts, keeps food diaries, and completes rating scales.
4. Psychoanalytic Treatment:
The client participates in individual therapy sessions ranging from weekly to five times a week. The therapy aims to bring unconscious motivations underlying disordered behaviours into conscious awareness. The therapist-client relationship is utilized to explore significant relationships from the client’s early life, such as their relationship with their parents.
