Structure of a Neuron:

  • Cell Body (Soma): Cell Body or Soma is the main part of the neuron that contains the nucleus. The nucleus controls the cell’s activities and contains the genetic material (DNA).
  • Dendrites: Dendrites are branch-like structures that receive signals from other neurons. They carry the information towards the cell body.
  • Axon: Axon is a long, thin structure that carries signals away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles, or glands. The axon is sometimes covered with a fatty layer called the myelin sheath, which helps speed up the transmission of signals.
  • Axon Terminals: Axon Terminals are the ends of the axon that connect to other neurons. They release chemicals called neurotransmitters that carry the signal to the next neuron.

Functions of Neuron:

  • Receiving Information: Neurons receive information from other neurons through their dendrites.
  • Processing Information: The cell body processes this information and determines if it should send a signal to the next neuron.
