Tarun studies in class five. His teacher has given a task to the students of his class. He has told them to write a paragraph on the Taj Mahal. But Tarun does not know much about the Taj Mahal. He only knows that it is a beautiful monument situated in Agra. Worried, he came back home in the evening and asked his grandfather:
তরুণ ক্লাস ফাইভে পড়ে । তার শিক্ষক তার ক্লাসের ছাত্রদের একটি কাজ দিয়েছেন । তিনি তাদের তাজমহলের উপর একটি অনুচ্ছেদ লিখতে বলেছেন । কিন্তু তরুণ তাজমহল সম্পর্কে তেমন কিছু জানে না । সে কেবল জানে যে এটি আগ্রায় অবস্থিত একটি সুন্দর স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ । উদ্বিগ্ন হয়ে সে সন্ধ্যায় বাড়ি ফিরে আসলো এবং তার ঠাকুরদাকে জিজ্ঞেস করলো :

“Grandfather, can you tell me something about Taj Mahal?”
“ঠাকুরদা, তুমি কি আমাকে তাজমহল সম্পর্কে কিছু বলতে পারবে?”

Tarun’s grandfather was a retired teacher. He knew a lot about this beautiful monument. He smiled and said,
তরুণের ঠাকুরদা ছিলেন একজন অবসরপ্রাপ্ত শিক্ষক। তিনি এই সুন্দর স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ সম্পর্কে অনেক কিছু জানতেন । তিনি হাসলেন এবং বললেন,

“Ok. If you promise to be a good boy, I will tell you many things about the Taj.”
“ঠিক আছে । তুমি যদি ভালো ছেলে হওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দাও, আমি তোমাকে তাজ সম্পর্কে অনেক কিছু বলব।”

Tarun promised not to be naughty. So, his grandfather began to tell him the story of Taj Mahal.
তরুণ দুষ্টু না হওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিল । তাই, তার ঠাকুরদা তাকে তাজমহলের গল্প বলতে শুরু করলেন ।

“Once upon a time there lived a prince named Khurram. He was the son of Jehangir, and the grandson of Akbar the Great. One day Khurram went to the Meena Bazaar with his friends. “একদা খুররম নামে এক রাজপুত্র বসবাস করতেন । তিনি ছিলেন জাহাঙ্গীরের ছেলে, এবং মহান আকবরের নাতি । একদিন খুররম তার বন্ধুদের সাথে মীনা বাজারে গিয়েছিলেন । সেখানে তিনি এক অত্যন্ত সুন্দরী মেয়ের এক ঝলক পেয়েছিলেন যে রেশম ও কাচের পুঁতি বিক্রি করছিল । মেয়েটি ছিল আরজুমান্দ বানু বেগম । তিনি একজন পারস্যের সম্ভ্রান্ত পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন । তার সাথে দেখা করার পর খুররম তার বাবার কাছে ফিরে যান এবং বলেন যে তিনি তাকে বিয়ে করতে চান । খুররম ১৬১২ সালে আরজুমান্দ বানু বেগমকে বিয়ে করেন , তাদের প্রথম দেখা হওয়ার পাঁচ বছর পরে ।”

At this point Tarun stopped his grandfather:
এই সময় তরুণ তার ঠাকুরদাকে থামিয়ে দেয়:

“But, grandfather, I don’t want to hear the story of prince Khurram. I want to know about the Taj Mahal.”
“কিন্তু ঠাকুরদা, আমি রাজপুত্র খুররমের গল্প শুনতে চাই না । আমি তাজমহল সম্পর্কে জানতে চাই ।”

“Be patient, Tarun. Let me finish the whole story,” said his grandfather.
“ধৈর্য ধরো, তরুণ । আমাকে পুরো গল্পটা শেষ করতে দাও,” তার ঠাকুরদা বললেন ।

“All right” said Tarun.
“ঠিক আছে” তরুন বললো ।

His grandfather continued with the story.
তার ঠাকুরদা গল্পটি বলা চালিয়ে গেলেন ।

“Prince Khurram was later known as Shah Jahan. He became the emperor in the year 1628. Arjumand Banu Begum was later renamed as Mumtaz Mahal”
“রাজপুত্র খুররম পরে শাহজাহান নামে পরিচিত হন । তিনি ১৬২৮ সালে সম্রাট হন । পরে আরজুমান্দ বানু বেগমের নামকরণ করা হয় মমতাজ মহল নামে।”

“But what does the name Mumtaz Mahal mean?” asked Tarun.
“কিন্তু মমতাজ মহল নামের অর্থ কি?” তরুণ জিজ্ঞেস করলো ।

“It means the brightest crown of the world,” answered his grandfather.
“এর অর্থ পৃথিবীর উজ্জ্বলতম মুকুট,” তার ঠাকুরদা উত্তর দিলেন ।

Then he continued with his tale, “When Mumtaz was on her deathbed, Shah Jahan promised her that he would not marry again. He also promised her that he would build the most beautiful mausoleum over her grave.”
তারপর তিনি তার গল্পটি বলা চালিয়ে গেলেন, “যখন মমতাজ তাঁর মৃত্যুশয্যায় ছিলেন, তখন শাহজাহান তাকে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন যে তিনি আর বিয়ে করবেন না । তিনি তাঁকে আরও প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন যে তিনি তাঁর সমাধির উপরে সবচেয়ে সুন্দর স্মৃতিসৌধ নির্মাণ করবেন ।”

“What is a mausoleum, grandfather?” asked Tarun in surprise.
“স্মৃতিসৌধ কি, ঠাকুরদা?” অবাক হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করল তরুণ ।

“Oh! A mausoleum is a building built to house the dead,” said grandfather. According to legends, Shah Jahan was so sad after her death that he ordered the court to mourn for two years. Later, Shah Jahan started to build the world’s most beautiful monument beside the river Yamuna in memory of his beloved wife. It took 22 years and 22,000 workers to build the monument. The Taj Mahal was built entirely out of white marble. This white marble was brought in from all over Asia. When Shah Jahan died in 1666, his body was placed next to the grave of Mumtaz Mahal. This magnificent monument came to be known as the Taj Mahal. It is now considered to be one among the seven wonders of the World. Grandfather paused for a moment. “Well, I have told you quite a lot today. Will this be helpful enough?”
“ওহ ! একটি স্মৃতিসৌধ হল মৃতদের থাকার জন্য নির্মিত একটি অট্টালিকা,” ঠাকুরদা বললেন । কাহিনী অনুসারে, শাহজাহান তাঁর মৃত্যুর পর এতটাই দুঃখ পেয়েছিলেন যে তিনি রাজসভায় দুই বছরের জন্য শোক পালনের নির্দেশ দিয়েছিলেন । তারপর শাহজাহান তার প্রিয়তমা স্ত্রীর স্মরণে যমুনা নদীর পাশে বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে সুন্দর স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ নির্মাণ শুরু করেন । স্মৃতিস্তম্ভটি তৈরি করতে ২২ বছর এবং ২২,০০০ শ্রমিক লেগেছিল । তাজমহল সম্পূর্ণরূপে সাদা মার্বেল দিয়ে তৈরি করা হয়েছিল । এই সাদা মার্বেল সমগ্র এশিয়া থেকে আনা হয়েছিল । ১৬৬৬ সালে যখন শাহজাহান মারা যান তাঁর মৃতদেহ মমতাজ মহলের কবরের পাশে রাখা হয় । এই চমত্‍কার স্মৃতিস্তম্ভটি তাজমহল নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করে । এটি এখন বিশ্বের সাতটি আশ্চর্যের মধ্যে একটি হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয় । ঠাকুরদা এক মুহুর্তের জন্য থেমে গেলেন । “আচ্ছা, আমি আজ তোমাকে অনেক কিছু বলেছি । এটা কি যথেষ্ট সহায়ক হবে?”

“Oh yes, now I can easily write a paragraph on the Taj Mahal,” said Tarun happily.
“ওহ হ্যাঁ, এখন আমি সহজেই তাজমহলের একটি অনুচ্ছেদ লিখতে পারবো,” তরুণ খুশি হয়ে বললো ।
