Mita and her classmates, a team of twenty five, went to Bandel last Saturday with their history teacher. They visited the Bandel Church. It was their first outing. So, everybody was excited.
মিতা এবং তার সহপাঠী, পঁচিশ জনের একটি দল, গত শনিবার তাদের ইতিহাসের শিক্ষকের সাথে ব্যান্ডেলে গিয়েছিল । তারা ব্যান্ডেল চার্চ পরিদর্শন করেছিল । এটা ছিল তাদের প্রথম সফর । তাই, সবাই উত্তেজিত ছিল ।
Their bus started from Chandannagar. On their way, the teacher asked them whether anyone had visited the Bandel Church before. Most of them had not, so they remained silent. Mita was an exception, though. She said with enthusiasm, “Yes, Madam. I have visited the place before”.
তাদের বাস চন্দননগর থেকে যাত্রা শুরু করেছিল । যাওয়ার পথে, শিক্ষক মহাশয় তাদের জিজ্ঞাসা করেছিলেন যে এর আগে কেউ ব্যান্ডেল চার্চ দেখেছে কিনা । তাদের বেশিরভাগই দেখেনি, তাই তারা চুপ করে রইল । যদিও মিতা ব্যতিক্রম ছিল । সে উৎসাহের সাথে বলল, “হ্যাঁ ম্যাডাম । আমি আগে জায়গাটি পরিদর্শন করেছি”।

“Oh, really! That’s great! Tell us what this place is like, Mita”, said the teacher. Everybody was looking at Mita with keen interest.
“ওহ, সত্যিই ! এটা দারুণ ! এই জায়গাটা কেমন তা আমাদের বলো, মিতা”, শিক্ষক বললেন । সবাই আগ্রহ নিয়ে মিতার দিকে তাকিয়েছিল।
Mita began, “My uncle, who lives there, took me to the church.”
মিতা শুরু করল, “আমার কাকু, যিনি সেখানে থাকেন, তিনি আমাকে চার্চে নিয়ে গেছিলেন ।”
“What did you see there?” asked Amina, one of Mita’s friends. Mita was about to speak when the teacher stopped her. She said, “If Mita tells us right now about everything she had seen, we will get familiar with all its details. Let the church remain a surprise to us.”
“তুমি সেখানে কি দেখেছ ?” মিতার এক বন্ধু, আমিনা জিজ্ঞেস করল । মিতা কথা বলতে গেলে শিক্ষক তাকে বাধা দিলেন । তিনি বললেন, “মিতা যদি এখনই আমাদেরকে সে যা দেখেছিল সে সম্পর্কে বলে দেয়, আমরা তার সমস্ত বিবরণের সাথে পরিচিত হয়ে যাব । চার্চটি আমাদের কাছে একটি বিস্ময় হয়ে থাকুক।”

Sunita, one of the students, asked the teacher, “There are so many places we could have visited. Why have we chosen Bandel Church then, Madam?”
সুনিতা, শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে একজন, শিক্ষককে জিজ্ঞেস করল, “এমন অনেক জায়গা আছে যা আমরা দেখতে যেতে পারতাম । তাহলে আমরা কেন ব্যান্ডেল চার্চ বেছে নিলাম, ম্যাডাম ?”
The teacher smiled. “A very good question, Sunita,”. She continued, “Sometimes we visit a place for fun and enjoyment. At times, our visit helps us to gather valuable information about the history and culture of a place.”
শিক্ষক হাসলেন । “খুব ভালো প্রশ্ন, সুনিতা,” । তিনি অবিরত থেকে বললেন, “কখনও কখনও আমরা মজা এবং উপভোগের জন্য একটি জায়গা পরিদর্শন করি । এই সময়, আমাদের পরিদর্শন একটি স্থানের ইতিহাস এবং সংস্কৃতি সম্পর্কে মূল্যবান তথ্য সংগ্রহ করতে সহায়তা করবে ।”

Sunita was curious, “Is Bandel Church a historical place, Madam?” “Yes, my child. It is one of the oldest churches in West Bengal,” said the teacher.
সুনিতা কৌতূহলী হয়ে বলল, “ব্যান্ডেল চার্চ কি ঐতিহাসিক স্থান, ম্যাডাম ?” “হ্যাঁ, আমার কন্যা । এটি পশ্চিমবঙ্গের প্রাচীনতম চার্চগুলির মধ্যে একটি,” শিক্ষক বললেন ।
Mita said, “Madam, my uncle told me that it can be seen as a memorial of the Portuguese settlement in Bengal”. Amina looked confused, “I don’t think I quite understand what Mita said.”
মিতা বললো, “ম্যাডাম, আমার কাকু আমাকে বলেছিলেন যে এটাকে বাংলায় পর্তুগিজ বসতির স্মারক হিসেবে দেখা যেতে পারে ।” আমিনা বিভ্রান্ত হয়ে বললো, “মিতা যা বলেছে আমি ঠিক বুঝতে পারছি না।”

The teacher patiently explained to the girls, “Ok, let me make it clear. Around 1571, the Portuguese began to use Bandel as a port. The Mughal Emperor Akbar gave them permission to build a town in Hooghly. In 1579, the Portuguese built a port on the banks of the Hooghly. They called over Augustinian monks from Goa to build a church at Bandel in 1599.”
শিক্ষক ধৈর্য সহকারে মেয়েদের বুঝিয়ে বললেন, “ঠিক আছে, আমি এটা পরিষ্কার করে বলছি । ১৫৭১ সালের দিকে, পর্তুগিজরা ব্যান্ডেলকে একটি বন্দর হিসেবে ব্যবহার করতে শুরু করে । মুঘল সম্রাট আকবর তাদের হুগলিতে একটি শহর নির্মাণের অনুমতি দিয়েছিলেন । ১৫৭৯ সালে, পর্তুগিজরা হুগলির তীরে একটি বন্দর নির্মাণ করেছিল । তারা ১৫৯৯ সালে ব্যান্ডেলে একটি গির্জা নির্মাণের জন্য গোয়া থেকে অগাস্টিনিয়ান সন্ন্যাসীদের ডেকেছিল ।”
Eventually they reached their destination. The bus stopped in front of the church. Everybody was elated and started talking all at once. Amina asked, “Is this the same building that was built in 1599, Madam?”
অবশেষে তারা তাদের গন্তব্যে পৌঁছে গেল । চার্চের সামনে বাস থামল । সবাই উচ্ছ্বসিত হয়ে একযোগে কথা বলতে শুরু করল । আমিনা জিজ্ঞেস করলো, “এটা কি সেই একই বিল্ডিং যা ১৫৯৯ সালে নির্মিত হয়েছিল ম্যাডাম ?”

“Not at all, Amina. This church was destroyed during the Mughal siege of Hooghly, “the teacher said as they walked inside through the gate. “What happened then?” asked Sunita. The priest, Father Joan da Cruz, along with a few thousand Christians, was taken to Agra fort before the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. His order was to punish the prisoners. So they were made to stand before ferocious elephants. But, surprisingly, one elephant carried Father Joan da Cruz right up to the emperor and knelt before him, as if asking for mercy. This peculiar incident impressed Shah Jahan. He set the prisoners free and sent them back to Bandel. Shah Jahan granted money to reconstruct the Church, and also donated 777 bighas of land to the church in the year 1633. Since then, it has been modified and reconstructed at different times,” the teacher explained to the eager students.
“একেবারেই নয়, আমিনা । হুগলির এই গির্জাটি মুঘল অবরোধের সময় ধ্বংস হয়ে গিয়েছিল,” গেট দিয়ে ভিতরে যাওয়ার সময় শিক্ষক বললেন । ” তারপর কি ঘটেছিল ?” সুনিতা জিজ্ঞেস করল । পুরোহিত, ফাদার জোয়ান দা ক্রুজ, সহ কয়েক হাজার খ্রিস্টানকে আগ্রা দুর্গে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়েছিল, মুঘল সম্রাট শাহজাহানের সামনে । তাঁর নির্দেশ ছিল বন্দীদের শাস্তি দেওয়া । তাই তাদেরকে হিংস্র হাতির সামনে দাঁড় করানো হয়েছিল । কিন্তু, আশ্চর্যজনকভাবে, একটি হাতি ফাদার জোয়ান দা ক্রুজকে ঠিক সম্রাটের কাছে নিয়ে গিয়েছিল এবং তাঁর সামনে নতজানু হয়েছিল, যেন ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করছিল । এই অদ্ভুত ঘটনা শাহজাহানকে মুগ্ধ করেছিল । তিনি বন্দীদের মুক্ত করেছিলেন এবং ব্যান্ডেলে ফেরত পাঠিয়েছিলেন । শাহজাহান চার্চটি পুনর্গঠনের জন্য অর্থ মঞ্জুর করেছিলেন এবং ১৬৩৩ সালে গির্জাটিকে ৭৭৭ বিঘা জমি দান করেছিলেন । তারপর থেকে, এটি বিভিন্ন সময়ে সংশোধন ও পুনর্গঠন করা হয়েছে, “শিক্ষক আগ্রহী শিক্ষার্থীদের ব্যাখ্যা করলেন ।

At last, all of them entered the church. They saw the Prayer Hall, the mast, the cemetery and also the statue of Mother Mary. They saw many wall paintings of Christ and the huge clock with four faces. At the end of the day the students felt happy and enriched. This trip had been most rewarding to all of them.
অবশেষে, তারা সবাই গির্জায় প্রবেশ করল । তারা প্রেয়ার হল, মাস্তুল, কবরস্থান এবং মা মেরির মূর্তিও দেখল । তারা খ্রিস্টের অনেক দেয়ালচিত্র এবং চারটি মুখ বিশিষ্ট বিশাল ঘড়ি দেখেছিল । দিন শেষে শিক্ষার্থীরা খুশি ও সমৃদ্ধ বোধ করেছিল । এই বেড়ানো তাদের সবার জন্য সবচেয়ে ফলপ্রসূ ছিল ।
