In this article, we will Explain Keyes’ Model of Well-Being and Highlight its Implications for Happiness.
Keyes’ Model of Well-Being.
Keyes’ Model of Well-Being is a comprehensive approach to understanding the different aspects of well-being. Keyes proposed that well-being is not simply the absence of mental illness, but a combination of emotional, psychological, and social factors that contribute to an individual’s overall sense of happiness and life satisfaction. Keyes’ model focuses on two main components: subjective well-being and psychological well-being.
Subjective Well-Being is the more traditional measure of happiness and is based on an individual’s self-reported level of life satisfaction, positive emotions, and lack of negative emotions. It includes both the affective and cognitive components of happiness.

Psychological Well-Being, on the other hand, is a more complex and multidimensional construct. It is composed of six key dimensions: autonomy, personal growth, purpose in life, positive relations with others, environmental mastery, and self-acceptance. These dimensions reflect an individual’s sense of psychological functioning and personal growth.
Autonomy refers to a sense of self-determination and the ability to make independent decisions. Personal growth is the pursuit of personal development and growth, while purpose in life is the sense of meaning and direction in life. Positive relations with others refer to satisfying and meaningful relationships with others. Environmental mastery is the sense of control over one’s environment and the ability to adapt to change, while self-acceptance is the ability to accept and feel positive about oneself.
